Prof. Dr. Henner Gimpel

Prof. Dr. Henner Gimpel holds the Chair for Digital Management and is head of the Digital Business Management program at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hohenheim. He is a member of Fraunhofer FIT and director of the FIM Research Center for Information Management.

The focus of his work is on the analysis and design of digitalization. He contributes to ensuring that digital technologies are used responsibly for individuals, the economy, and society. To this end, he deals with socio-technical information systems in companies and other contexts. His objectives include the development and use of information systems in a way that is both humane and economically effective, as well as the analysis of the acceptance and handling of digital technologies. The focus is often on individuals in their roles as employees, customers, users, patients, digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), operational processes and value creation, as well as the economic and social impacts of digitalization.

Professor Gimpel focuses on the following topics:

  • Artificial and hybrid intelligence
  • Effective, responsible use of IT
  • Digital health and well-being
  • Twin transformation

In his research, Professor Gimpel primarily uses theoretically based quantitative empirical studies (laboratory and field experiments, structured surveys, analysis of secondary data using statistical and data mining methods) and links these with design oriented and conceptional theoretical approaches. His research is anchored in information systems and management with strong ties to psychology, computer science, behavioral economics, and in parts to sociology, medicine, and ethics. Professor Gimpel gained international research experience during two research stays at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in New York and a research stay at the Center for Interuniversity Research and Analysis on Organizations in Montréal.

Professor Gimpel supports numerous companies in various industries in the development of innovative solutions for individual questions and challenges regarding their digital transformation. He also gained practical experience as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company for five years. Some of the companies Professor Gimpel has worked with in recent years: Alexander Thamm, Allianz, AOK, Arbor Revital, BMW, Brauerei Gebr. Maisel, Caritasverband für die Diözese Augsburg, Carl Zeiss, DATEV, Deutsche Bank, Flughafen München, Handwerkskammer der Pfalz, Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme, ias, IBM, inno-focus, Klinik Martha Maria Nürnberg, Klinikverbund Allgäu, Klinikum Bayreuth, Microsoft, NORD/LB, Porsche Consulting, PwC, ReqPOOL, Roto Frank, Siemens, soffico, Stadt Frankfurt am Main, Stadt Stuttgart, Stadt Überlingen, Universitätsklinikum Augsburg, Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Universitätsklinikum Mannheim, Versicherungskammer Bayern, Vonovia, VVS, Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Überlingen.

In his teaching, Professor Gimpel covers topics in information systems and digital management. In these areas he offers lectures, exercises, (project) seminars and the supervision of individual research, theses, and dissertations for Bachelor and Master students and doctoral candidates. The didactic preparation is based on the theoretical model of the cognitive apprenticeship. In a balanced ratio of instructive and permissive teaching and learning opportunities, students can acquire specialist, methodological and personnel skills. In addition to the courses offered at the University of Hohenheim, Professor Gimpel is a lecturer at the Goethe Business School and the Digital Leadership Academy.
